L'histoire « Le gone du Chaâba » commence en 1965,
trois ans après l'indépendance de l'Algérie.
Omar, agé de neuf ans et né en France, est le protagoniste touchant du filme et lui donne son authenticité.
Avec ses parents, des immigrés d'Algérie, ses frères et ses soeurs et une vingtaine d'autres familles immigrées algériennes,
il habite auprès de la banlieue lyonnaise, dans un petit bidonville, appelé le « Chaâba ».
Le Chaâba, ce petit bout de terrain n'est que des baraques en planches et en tôles ondulées qui entourent la maison du père d'Omar.
La plupart des familles se sont enfuites de la pauvreté et de la guerre pour trouver en France la prospérité et la liberté...

It is the semi-autobiographical story of Azouz Begag who was the son of Algerian immigrants living in a shanty town, the Chaâba,
near Lyon.
Set in the sixties, it’s fairly horrifying to read of the conditions they lived in but it is a fascinating insight
into immigrant life and culture. No electricity, a single source of water, very questionable sanitation.
The highlight of the week was the arrival of the dustbin lorry – when it emptied its contents there was an opportunity to find treasure...
