STORYTELLER – “TRISTAN ET ISEUT”
With Stéphanie Bénéteau

Date: Wednesday, September 27th, 2017
Location: Alliance Française, 340 MacLaren street | 6PM

About Stéphanie Bénéteau:

Stéphanie Bénéteau grew up hearing stories in three languages. Her French-Canadian father told her stories of a bank robber and his dog, her American mother read to her every night, and the children in the Italian village where she grew up told her stories of the witch that lived at the end of the street. She studied literature and education before finding her true vocation as a storyteller, a career she has been pursuing full time since 1996. She has put on a solo of erotic stories, a show of stories from the Arabian Nights which she toured in Europe, and most recently the story of Tristan and Iseult for which she received a grant from the Conseil des arts et lettres du Québec. Stéphanie tells ancient myths and legends from the oral tradition in a lyrical, feminine voice touched with a hint of saucy humour. She also tells extensively to children.

About “Tristan et Iseut”:

Erotic passion and murderous rage succeed each other in this medieval love story that keeps audiences enthralled until the cliff-hanging finale. King Marc of Cornwall, his wife Iseult of Ireland and his nephew Tristan are caught in a tragic love triangle. Watch as they weave their way through danger and delight, accompanied by a motley crew of secondary characters, lepers, dwarves and servants who add color and humour to the tale. Love, laughter, sea voyages, dragons, beautiful green-eyed maidens and psychic dwarves, noble knights and cuckolded kings: all is in place for an unforgettable voyage.

Free entrance for members and AFO students.
$5 for non members.

CONCERT – “FRANGLAISE

Date: Wednesday, April 5th, 2017
Genre: Jazz acoustic and classical
Location:  Alliance Française, 352 MacLaren street | 6PM

“Franglaise” is a group formed by Seraphin LaRiviere and Lyn Tremblay, who sings a wide selection french and english classics celebrating the Quebec and Canadian music culture.

Along with the songs, they discuss how the lyrics change in translation, and question why Quebec music has been sadly kept mostly to its own province, while anglo music has proliferated throughout the country.

With a 5-octave vocal range that runs the gamult from tender to tempest, Serafin LaRiviere has cultivated a cross-genre audience that embraces Jazz, Torch and even Classical music.

One must employ the word “Cabaret” with caution.  Often thought of as Déjà Vu, “been there, done that, got the top hat”, Lyne Tremblay comes to her cabaret repertoire following long service on the most prestigious stages of Europe, where the art form is taken seriously and the audience takes no prisoners.

Wine and cheese will be served.

CONCERT – IRÈNE JACOB AND FRANCIS JACOB”
irene jacob 0182

Date: Wednesday 22 February 2017
Location:  Alliance Française, 352 rue MacLaren | 6PM

French actress Irène Jacob and Francis Jacob are not only united as siblings but also as musicians. Four years ago they decided to reunite, with Francis in the US and Irène in Paris, to start working on their new album “En bas de chez moi “.

“This new album En bas de chez moi, I see it like that, as a secret but fresh and patient plant that appears unexpectedly” says Irène.

A few years ago, Irène was an actress in Paris and he was a musician in New york and they decided, after their father’s death, to start making music together. The plant started to grow: he was a challenging guitarist, her voice was spontaneous and her body agile. Irène sings to tell a story, and Francis is the composer, he plays and creates the beat. He is harsh but fair and she is flexible but rigorous. It is only beginning and the story continues to grow..

IRÈNE JACOB

Along with her musical talent, Irène Jacob is considered one the best French actresses of her generation. Winning best female actress award at the Cannes festival in 1991, she gained international recognition for her work with Polish filmmaker Krzysztof Kieslowski.

Date : vendredi 30 septembre 2016

Music of Maurice Ravel and Albéric Magnard. The involvement of the two composers in the global conflict was very different. Ravel, a pacifist sensitive to the ideas of Jean Jaurès, tried to join the war effort despite being refused by the military authorities. He managed to do a brief stint in 1916 but was decommissioned in 1917. Magnard was also excluded from the war effort because of his age (he was 49 in 1914) but died on September 3, 1914, defending his house against the German invaders.

DOCUMENTARY: “LA MALÉDICTION DE NAÎTRE FILLE” (IN FRENCH) AND DISCUSSION

Manon Loizeau
Date:

Tuesday, March 9, 2016
Location120 University, Ottawa, Social Sciences Building,University of Ottawa, Room FSS4004 | 11h30-13h30

After the screening, there will be a possibility to discuss and debate with the public.

EXHIBITION – COLETTE GRÉCO-RIDDLE: « AN AMBIGUOUS PROFILE »

Colette Crégo-Riddle_expo-Portrait2

DatesAvailable from April 30th to  May 30th, 2014

Opening: April 30th, 6pm

Location: Alliance Française Art Gallery, 352 MacLaren Street, Ottawa

The artistic process involves compromise. It has been my experience that this process benefits from chance impressions and elusive imprints which either attract or repel. These are solitary points of decision that solicit a visceral or experiential reaction; to preserve, to adjust, to improvise and to embellish…

Various techniques and processes lead the artist to shape her creative ideas: oil paints, engravings, charcoal as well as oil bar drawings…These media enable Colette Gréco-Riddle to give depth and matter to her works.

CONFERENCE: « THE CONSTRAINT WRITINGS» BY HERVÉ LE TELLIER – FRANCE

In the celebration of the Francophonie week

Hervé Le Tellier

Both French mathematician, writer (novels, poetry, theatre…), journalist, publisher and teacher, Hervé Le Tellier was born in Paris on April 21th, 1957.

In 1992, he joined the OuLiPo (Ouvroir de Littérature Potentielle), an international association formed of writers and mathematicians.

Members gather once a month to collect ideas surrounding the “constraint” notion and produce new structures in order to encourage and promote creation.

In theory, the constraint is used as a foundation for developing free creation: making the writer to stray from automatisms linked to the conventional use of the language. In this way, constraint reaches new level of expression and new dimension of creativity. Either explicit or implicit, Hervé Le Tellier – Oulipo’s reference book author: Esthétique de l’Oulipo – will unveil the secrets of a constraint which is paradoxically a meaning to cleanse language and the art of creative expression.
