A propos du concert

Dans le cadre des échanges artistiques musicaux entre la France et le Manitoba organisés par l’Alliance Française du Manitoba, Gérald Laroche, musicien-conteur, multi-instrumentiste manitobain et Gilles Chabenat, joueur de vielle à roue français, ont été invités produire une création musicale commune.
La thématique du voyage a rapproché les deux artistes : les voyages des forestiers et des muletiers en Vallée Noire dans la province du Berry et ceux effectués par les coureurs des bois et les Voyageurs le long de la Rivière Rouge.

Le concert proposé est le fruit de cette rencontre artistique. Il sera aussi l’occasion pour les spectateurs de découvrir un instrument ancien la vielle à roue, et d’échanger avec les artistes autour de leur création.

A propos des artistes

Gilles Chabenat est né en 1963 dans le Centre de la France, où il débute la vielle à l’âge de 13 ans avec l’association d’art et tradition populaire les Thiaulins. Après avoir suivi les cours de Georges Simon, il remporte plusieurs prix de musique traditionnelle. Il se consacre alors au répertoire de sa région, avec déjà l’idée d’aborder d’autres styles musicaux.
En 1992, Gilles Chabenat rejoint ainsi le groupe Corse I Muvrini pour une aventure commune de douze ans. Depuis quelques temps, il collabore avec des musiciens de jazz : Vincent Mascart, Jacques Mahieux, Alain Bruel, Alain Gibert et Jean-Marc Padovani notamment, au travers de plusieurs créations dont une lecture théâtrale d’Enzo Corman.
Le parcours et l’évolution musicale de Gilles sont donc constamment façonnés par les rencontres. Son approche de la vielle privilégie le caractère multiple d’un instrument qui se métamorphose et se réinvente sans cesse depuis plus de mille ans.

Gérald Laroche a été récipiendaire d'un prix Juno, en 1991. Ce maître de l'harmonica est souvent comparé à d'autres harmonicistes légendaires dont Larry Adler, Sonny Terry et Sonny Boy Williamson. Les sons qu'il peut créer avec ses nombreux harmonicas ne cessent d'étonner. Sa musique est d'autant plus originale qu'il s'inspire non seulement de ses racines canadiennes-françaises et de ses ancêtres, les Voyageurs du Manitoba, mais également du folklore traditionnel d'autres pays du monde. Ses compositions évoquent des images du passé et du présent, des gens qu'il a rencontrés et des endroits qu'il a visités. Harmonicas en mains, Gérald semble pouvoir projeter des images directement de l'instrument alors qu'il raconte ses histoires et légendes en français et en anglais.
En plus de quelque 60 harmonicas, Gérald emploie également la flûte celtique, l'arc à bouche indien, l'archet, la guimbarde et d'autres instruments à percussion pour créer une fusion unique de styles musicaux : canadien-français, zydeco, cajun, boogie, africain, celtique, sans oublier le blues.
Maîtrisant l'art de jouer de l'harmonica, Gérald Laroche en joue souvent jusqu'à 25 au cours d'un spectacle, alors qu'il en transporte avec lui en tournée près de 60 à la fois.

About the concert

In the context of musical artistic exchanges between France and Manitoba organized by the Alliance Française of Manitoba, Gerald Laroche, musician-storyteller, Manitoban multi-instrumentalist and Gilles Chabenat, French player of hurdy-gurdy, were invited to create together original works of music.
They recognize themselves in the journey’s: the journeys of foresters and muleteers in Black Valley (Berry, France) and those made by the trappers and travelers along the Red River in Canada.

The concert is the result of this artistic meeting between Gilles Chabenat and Gilles Laroche. It will also be the opportunity for you to discover the hurdy-gurdy, and to discuss with the artists about their creation.

About the artists

Gilles Chabenat was born in 1963 in the Center of France, where he begins the hurdy-gurdy at the age of 13 with the association of art and popular tradition Thiaulins. Having taken Georges Simon's course, he won several prizes of traditional music. He dedicates itself then to the directory of his region, with already the idea to approach the other musical styles.
In 1992, Gilles Chabenat joins the Corsica group I Muvrini for a common adventure of twelve years. For some time, he collaborates with musicians of jazz: Vincent Mascart, Jacques Mahieux, Alain Bruel, Alain Gibert and Jean-Marc Padovani in particular, through several creations of which Enzo Corman's theatrical reading.
The career and the musical evolution of Gilles are shaped thus constantly by meetings. His approach of the hurdy-gurdy privileges, the multiple character of an instrument which metamorphoses and reinvents ceaselessly since more thousand years.

Gérald Laroche was a receiver of a Juno prize, in 1991. This master of the harmonica is often compared with the other legendary harmonica players among whom Larry Adler, Sonny Terry and Sonny Boy Williamson. The sounds which he can create with his numerous harmonicas do not stop amazing. His music is original all the more as he is not only inspired by his Canadian-French roots and by his ancestors, the Travelers of the Manitoba, but also by the traditional folklore of the other countries of the world. His compositions recall images of the past and of the present, people whom he met and places which he visited. Harmonicas in hands, Gérald seems to be able to throw images directly of the instrument while he tells his stories and legends in French and in English.
Besides about 60 harmonicas, Gérald also uses the Celtic flute, the bow with mouth Indian, the Jew's harp and the other percussion instruments to create a unique fusion of musical styles: Canadian-French, zydeco, Cajun, boogie, African, Celtic, without forgetting the blues.
Mastering the art to play the harmonica, Gérald Laroche often plays until 25 during a show, while he transports with him around 60 harmonicas at once.
