Sylvio GAGNON "French
Riviera... ...inspirational to see, delightful to
paint" Oil
Paintings From May 09 to 16, 2003 Opening Friday 09 May at 6:00
PM |
Living in Ottawa, Sylvio
Gagnon is an artist whose workshop is nature itself. He
captures the transcient beauty of this country's four
seasons. He has dedicated his artistic career to painting
scenery. He can sometimes be found near the Rideau canal but
more likely in remote areas of the forest or countryside
because he likes to take new trails to discover unexplored
impressions within the Canadian landscape. Critics say that
Sylvio Gagnon's work evokes a certain insatiable desire in the
spontaneity of gesture, the openness of tonality and the
freedom of subject choice and composition. |

Hans J. METTLER "Dialogues
magiques" Infography
From May 20 to June 15, 2003 Opening Tuesday May 20 at 6:00
PM With the
support of the Embassy of Switzerland in
Canada |
Hans Jörg Mettler was born in
Switzerland. Until now the events in his life have taken
him from sciences to journalism and lead him to the arts.
Combining his diverse areas of study and professional
experiences in Europe and Canada, it is now through pictorial
language that he expresses his past and present concerns.
He currently shares his life between Canada and Europe
(especially Switzerland), and teaches computer imagery at the
University of Québec in Hull. In his practice Hans Mettler
weaves links between art and science, more specifically
between the "new economy" and genetics. Photography, mixed
media, computer as well as multi-media installations appear
among his preferred means of expression. |

Bernard
ÉMONT "Samuel de Champlain and Marc Lescarbot, at the
origins of French America" Lecture
Friday, May 23, 2003 at 6:00
PM (in
the Contemporary Art Galery of the Alliance
Française) |
A lawyer in Paris, Marc
Lescarbot (1570-1642) landed in Acadia in May 1606. He
remained there until the summer of 1607, when the colony was
abandoned. Established in Port-Royal, Lescarbot travelled
throughout Acadia, learning about the traditions and way of
life of the First Nations peoples in the region, as well as
taking the settlers' problems and the possibilities of
colonization in North America to heart. Lescarbot published
his impressions in several texts, such as his “History of
New France” (1609). Also a poet and a
playwright, Lescarbot presented his “Theatre of
Neptune” at Port-Royal in 1606, the first stage
performance in North America. Returning to France (1607), he
went back to practicing law, but he always continued to be
interested in the development of colonization in Acadia.
Bernard Emont taught during several years in Canada. A
specialist in Canadian literature and civilization, he is
the author of “Lescarbot: mythes et rêves fondateurs de la
Nouvelle-France ", Paris-Montreal, L'Harmattan,
2002. |
