Monique POIRIER
"Parfums d'ici et d'ailleurs"
Oil paintings on display from June 17 to July 9, 2003.
Opening reception Tuesday, June 17 at 6 :00 PM

Monique Poirier has devoted herself to her artwork for the last few years, after a 28 year
career with the Public Service of Canada. She studied formally at the Ottawa School of Art
and at the art school Vogue. Concern for detail, colour and light are the essence of her artwork. She works from photographs taken during her travels and she is particularly inspired by regional sites. Her preferred media are oil and acrylic resin on canvas.

And still:
Hans J. METTLER
"Dialogues magiques"
Computer graphics
Until June 15, 2003
With the support of the Embassy of Switzerland in Canada

The opening of the art display by Hans J. Mettler entitled « Dialogues magiques », held on 20, was a great success. There are still two weeks left to admire Mr Mettler’s artwork.
For this display, he created a new series which focusses on tulips and various architectural monuments of the national capital. In the same way that these beautiful spring flowers brighten the city of Ottawa, the tulips have a striking place in the collages. A magical dialogue is expressed between the two subjects while also achieving a feeling of calm and peace. The other works of the collection on display include collages he created from 2000 and 2002. These different collages have been the subject of displays in both Canada and Europe as well as in specialized publications (in particular the series « Du Big Bang à la conscience »). Excellent reviews honoring Hans J. Mettler’s original artwork can be found in the newspapers as well as on local and national radio and television stations (ARTV, Radio-Canada, Rogers and NewRO).

On July 15, 2003, the Notre Dame Cathedral will be the site for an exceptional concert by « Les petits chanteurs de Lyon », a 45-member French youth choir. The Alliance Française would appreciate your help in looking for host families to accomodate the choir members for the duration of their stay in Ottawa as they continue their North-American tour in July. The «Petits chanteurs» will spend two nights in Ottawa (July 14-16, 2003). If you would like to participate, please contact the Alliance Française (Alexis Loriot : tel 234-9470 ext 226 or by e-mail : cdr@af.ca.

Outside Events

June 21, 2003 : La Fête de la Musique. Celebrate and make some music!
Since 1982 and through the years, the principles of the « Fête de la Musique » have appealed to and captivated more and more participants around the world. If the incentive and dynamism of the French cultural network abroad (French embassies, French cultural institutes and Alliance Française centers) has contributed significantly to this international event, there are also many local partcipants (Departments of culture, municipal and regional governements as well as artistic associations) who are involved in the organization.
By adapting to the cultural particularities of each country, this celebration of music has known how to invent itself, even reinvent itself and has become an international event. Just think of it!
The Alliance Française in Ottawa regrets not being able to find other partners for the 2003 edition of the « Fête de la Musique ». As a result you are invited to the party in 2004. But why wait? Make music and why not this upcoming June 21st?
Please note however that the « Fête de la Musique » will be celebrated in Vancouver and Toronto through the impetus of the Alliance Française centers of these two cities.

The Franco-Ontarian Festival
From June 11-15, 2003, + June 24, 2003 (Fête de la Saint-Jean Baptiste)
The Franco-Ontarian Festival began in 1976, in the heart of Ottawa , in the Byward Market. At that time, this event, known as « Semaine Française/French week », was to provide an opportunity for Franco-Ontarians to get together and celebrate their culture. Since the 1990’s, this event has become an institution in the region as a result of it s increasingly popular mission to promoting Franco-Ontarian culture at the provincial, national and even international level.
By highlighting new talent and welcoming well-known artists from around the world, the Franco-ontarian Festival is without a doubt a leader in cultural promotion. For the 28th annual Franco-Ontarian Festival there will be the usual exceptional evening concerts and other great entertainment as well as activities for families. Get ready to celebrate from June 11 to June 15, 2003 and on June 24, 2003. For more information, http://www.ffo.ca infoline 613-155-2553

French Theatre at the National Arts Centre : Discover the 2003-2004 season.
The French theatre programming for the 2003-2004 season at the NAC has been unveiled. Denis Marleau, the artistic director has indicated that he chose to bring together playwrights, from this region and abroad, who couldn’t stop themselves from sharing their dreams : Pinget, Tchekhov, Molière, Brel, Pomerlo, Mouawad, Brassard and de Vasconcelos. Dreams of yesterday and tomorrow, patiently constructed or quickly concocted out of necessity, to say it in other words, other images, which continue to appeal to us in our daily lives and in the face of the obscure forces of history which capsize us today. Dreams coming up from the televised material which we are spoon fed, dreams that are not always fashionable which take us elsewhere to a reality that is pure entertainment.
