A brief timeline of the history of Alliance Française


 1883 : « L’association nationale pour la propagation de la langue française dans les colonies et à l’étranger » (The National Association for propagation of the French language in the colonies and abroad) is born under the aegis of Paul Cambon and Pierre Foncin.

 1884 : Ferdinand de Lesseps, Louis Pasteur, Ernest Renan, Jules Verne, Armand Colin… are among the members of the Board of Directors of the Alliance française de Paris. The first Alliance française of Europe opens at Barcelona, then another opens in Sénégal, in Mauritius and in Mexico.

 1886 : The Alliance française de Paris is recognised as a public utility.

 1889 : The 1st Alliance in India then in Australia, at Melbourne. 1902 : The 1st Alliance at Montréal and the creation of a Federation of Alliances françaises in the United States.

 1904 : The Alliance française has 150 committees in France and 450 abroad.

 1917 : The 1st Alliance in the West Indies and in the Dominican Republic.

 1919 : Opening of the Ecole pratique de la langue française (practical School of French Language) at 101 bd Raspail in Paris.

 1940 : The archives of the Alliance française are carried to Berlin by the Nazis.

 1943 : General de Gaulle makes a speech at Algiers where he reaffirms the vocation of the Alliance.

 1944 : Reopening of the Alliance française de Paris after the war.

 1979 : A record year with 32 000 students at the Paris school.

 2002 : Modernisation of Alliances speeds up everywhere in the world.

 2007 : The Fondation Alliance Française (Alliance française Foundation) is formed.
